5 Ways to Enjoy Each Day

Well its Friday. As someone who works Monday to Friday, I can tell you there is something special about today. At work we dress casually, chat more to each other (usually about plans for the weekend) and are just generally happier. For many, Fridays are one last hurdle before the weekend. These people live for their weekends and, on the one hand, I can hardly blame them. Weekends are when they get to do what they want to do, whether it is partying, eating out, playing sport, etc. On the other hand, it seems such a waste to simply “wish away” 5 days of the week as I see many people do. The big idea for today is: enjoy each and every day.

How can I enjoy each day when I have a boring and depressing job you ask? Well, enjoying each day is about finding enjoyment in the simple things in life. The following are some ways in which I enjoy my weekdays when I have to work:

1. Have a Morning Routine which I love

As I have written about here, I wake at 5am and have a couple of hours to myself before going to work. This gives me time to work on myself, whether it be through reading, exercising, stretching and/ or blogging. Waking up is so much easy when you have a morning routine you enjoy, rather than having to madly rush to get ready and out the door.

2. Listen to Great Music & Audiobooks to and from Work

Buying an Ipod was one of the best investments I have made (and I am still using my trusty 3rd generation model). A great way to be inspired is to listen to audiobooks and podcasts. I have few recommendations here.

3. Build Relationships with my Work Colleagues

My attitude is this: if I am going to spend 40 hours a week with a group of people, I should take the time to develop good relationships with each of them. This is not necessarily about trying to make friends (although this is good if it happens). Rather, it is about building relationships whereby you can talk and have fun with your work colleagues. Need advice on building relationships? This article has simple, yet powerful, advice.

4. Ensure I take a Lunch Break

I see many people at work who never take a lunch break. Do they have too much work? Probably. Do I think they could find ways to be more productive so that they could take a lunchbreak? Definately.

My ideal lunchbreak is this: when the weather is fine, I go out to the park and either read, write or people watch. This clears my head and means during the afternoon I will have increased focus and energy (ie I will be more productive).

5. Take Pride in Cooking Dinner

After sitting at a computer most of the day, I really enjoy cooking in the evening. I find chopping vegetables somewhat therapeutic (is that strange?) and I often get into a good rhythm as I move around the kitchen throwing things into pots and pans.

Great points here. I’m re-entering the workforce after 1 year off. It was a wonderful blessing to have the ability to take the time off, and as I return, I know I will be starting from scratch again - with likely a crappy job. However, we can do things to make our time and experience better. We get about as much out of a job as we put in.

Your ideas are a great starting point to keep people involved in making the workplace a place you look forward to going.

I too find that rising early and enjoying a relaxed morning routine makes the day run much more smoothly. 5am would be pushing it for me, but I get up at 6am and spend an hour writing (usually fiction, sometimes articles for my blog The Office Diet) before work.

I find a lunchbreak the ideal time to fit in some exercise — I tend to go to the gym for a quick workout, or for a walk. Means I’m much less likely to nod off at my desk mid-afternoon!

I agree, work can be fun too. I build in little rewards such as tea at 4:00 pm, and I fit exercise into the day by parking a block away from my appointments and enjoying a little stroll (and stretch) as I make my way from point to point.

I also try to pay a few sincere compliments to my clients or co-workers. Everybody thrives on a little well deserved recognition. why keep those positive thoughts to yourself? Sharing is good for the soul.
