The Perfect Day

The Perfect Day

Every so often life gets a bit hectic and crazy. When this happens, one thing I like to do is to slow down and think about my perfect day. This is not a perfect day in the sense that I can do whatever or be wherever I want. It’s nice to picture myself on a beach somewhere drinking coronas or skiing down the slopes of Whistler, but what is of more benefit to me is to visualize (and even better write out) the perfect day that I can experience right here, right now (as Fatboy Slim would say).

This exercise is based on a simple, but very powerful belief: it is possible for each of us can live happy, consciousness, and meaningful lives each and every day. Everything in our life may not be “perfect” – perhaps we are lonely, want more money, desperately need a holiday, dream of a better body or are bored with our work – but I believe with a shift in our mindset we can start enjoying the present, while still working towards the future we desire.

Happiness is a Dish Best Shared

Happiness is a Dish Best Shared

“Happiness is not real unless it is shared.” – Chris McCandless

Last Saturday I stood alone atop the mountain at Big White Ski Resort enjoying the sun, surveying the spectacular scenery, and contemplating the ski run that lay before me. It was a wonderful moment in a wonderful day. It was that type of moment when everything seems just right. And yet, despite this feeling of peace, there was something missing from the experience….

Just two nights earlier I had watched the film Into the Wild. For those who have not seen the movie (or read the book), it is based on the true story of a young man called Chris McCandless who cuts off all ties to his upper middle class family and follows his instinct to go “anywhere but here.” He lives out of a backpack and ekes out a marginal existence drifting across the United States. Eventually he heads north and enters the Alaskan Wilderness. He never returns.

Resurrecting Family Rituals

Resurrecting Family Rituals

Nothing provides a sense of place and a feeling of fulfillment quite like participating in family traditions or rituals. These can be something you do together for special holidays, or weekly observances used to maintain your close family ties.

Participating in special family rituals can evoke various feelings, set different moods, and elicit past memories. If you choose those traditions or habits that make you and your family feel good, you can bring about feelings of happiness and joy.

Unfortunately, the demands of juggling work and home make it easy to forget about family traditions that have been passed down from one generation to the next. These things also make it difficult to consider beginning new rituals that your children can pass along to their heirs.

7 Benefits of Losing Weight

7 Benefits of Losing Weight

Are you overweight? If your life never quite satisfies you – if you don’t feel you’re as confident, productive, motivated or enthused as you could be, try kick-starting the changes you want to make by beginning with your body.

Seven years ago, I was shy, chubby, lacking in confidence, and struggling to think beyond my immediate future: going to Cambridge University. I’d been fatter than my classmates since the age of nine or ten. Finally losing that extra thirty or so pounds I’d been carrying around has had a tremendous impact on my life over the past seven years.

How to Sharpen Your Networking Skills

How to Sharpen Your Networking Skills

Last week I was on a 4 day training course in Downtown Vancouver, so it seemed like the perfect opportunity to sharpen my networking skills. I am normally fairly quiet and introverted, so I often need to make an effort when it comes to networking and the like. That said, I have come a long way since my days of being painfully shy.

The following are some of the most important networking lessons I have picked up in recent years, plus a description of how I applied them last week. If networking is one of your weaknesses, I strongly recommend you try some of these suggestions.

Ecstasy Without Addiction

Ecstasy Without Addiction

Everyone enjoys partaking in activities that make them feel good. One of the problems we face, though, is that we have become a society of excesses. Especially for those fighting to maintain some semblance of work life balance, it can be easy to use certain activities as a form of escapism. Things that are normally used for social interaction or temporary mood enhancers become central to achieving any sort of happiness, and suddenly the mind or the body – sometimes both – become addicted. Once that happens, it is impossible to find fulfillment or contentment without indulging to unhealthy extremes.

There are many types of addictions, and each is used to fulfill a different need, to satisfy various emotions, or used to dull painful memories or experiences. Using people or substances as crutches is unhealthy. It can result in the loss of ability to cope with reality altogether, and can lead to serious depressions when the effects of our abusive behavior finally subside.

Mind Over Mattress: How to Wake Early When All You Want to Do is Sleep

Mind Over Mattress: How to Wake Early When All You Want to Do is Sleep

I normally wake at 5am, and have been doing so for some time. In fact, if I didn’t wake early you probably wouldn’t be reading this right now as I simply wouldn’t have the time to write for this blog. This past week, however, I have struggled to wake early and have been hitting the snooze button for the first time in a long time… what’s going on???

One thing I have learned over the past year and a half is that waking early is not just about setting your alarm clock for a particular time and getting up. For example, it is pointless to force yourself to wake early if it leaves you feeling like a zombie for the rest of the day. If you are interested in waking earlier, the following are a few things I have learned that may be of help. And hopefully we can work out why I have been bashing the snooze button so much….
