Hi Peter,
Sorry for the late reply but I have had some computer problems.
Dale Carnegie's classic "How to stop worrying and start living" is very good for its simple straight forward approach. I bought it last year when having a tough time and had neglected not finishing it. You are right that living in the now without neglect for the future is exactly a good thing. So if we can be comfortable with what we are doing and understand that that is contributing to the future then it helps put things into perspective. The other is "The purpose of your life" which is a bit spiritual and very different in style and more focussed on purpose which encompasses our fears and desires etc.

Cheers..

Sjdjw,
I am so sorry to hear about your loss. 42 is such a young age for your late husband to pass away, and I completely understand how such an event would turn your life upside down and make it hard to be happy. I haven't dealt with the death of a close family member, and to be honest the very thought of it makes me feel sick. I only really write about what I have personal experience with, so I guess that is why it is not something I have ever mentioned on this blog. My thoughts are with you, and I wish you all the best for finding happiness again in your life.

As a widow of ten months, worry is something that is very hard to negotiate with. My late hubby-an Aussie, BTW-was only 42 when he passed away from a swift and sudden heart attack. I used to have this wonderfully passionate and semi-worry free life; now I swing from worrying about everything to not giving a flip about anything. It's quite the koan of my new exixtance. All the self help/happiness blogs don't seem to adress loss through death at all when speaking about finding happiness. I would love to have happiness hover over me again, but sadly I know it will be a long time until that happens.

Al,

Yes I have started meditating in the past year and it definitely helps. What really helps me though - in that it gives me that REBOOT experience you mention - is yoga. I have just started in recently and am hooked.

Ruth,

As an outside observer of the US, I would have to agree with much of what you said. I am reminded of FDR's famous quote: "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself". I can feel a change coming though......

Oh, and thanks for the career suggestion :) . Who knows? I am looking for a new career......

Jenny,

As a parent, I can relate to you worrying about your kids. I do the same with Xavier. I think, though, some of this worry is comes under the "productive worry" I mentioned at the start of the article. There are many things parents SHOULD worry about in relation to their kids. But also there are many other things we shouldn't.....

Worry is not an easy subject, and the strategies I have written about in this article are much easier said than done.
